Pashmina Shawls from The Kashmir Company
Authentic Pashmina Shawls – Hand-Embroidered in the Kashmir Valley
"It wouldn't surprise me to find shawls like these in a craft museum, or even in a museum of natural history; to us they are significant as a form of art."
— The New York Times, January 28 2011
Grand Pashmina Shawls – Original Works of Art
Every pashmina shawl in this collection is handmade and hand-embroidered by Kashmiri artisans — families who have practised the craft for generations, and who may spend months, sometimes as long as two years, to complete a single wrap. Each is worked on pure Himalayan pashmina, and because it is made entirely by hand, no two are alike. When one sells, it is gone.
What Makes a Real Pashmina Shawl
Genuine pashmina is not simply "cashmere by another name." It is the finest, rarest grade of the fibre, and a true piece carries marks a machine cannot fake:
-
The fibre: combed from the Changthangi goat at some 15,000 feet in Ladakh — one goat yields barely enough for half a shawl.
-
The hand: hand-spun, handwoven, and hand-embroidered — never mass-produced. The embroidery is worked stitch by stitch over months.
-
The ring test: true pashmina is so fine that a full shawl can be drawn through a wedding ring — the oldest proof of the real thing.
-
The uniqueness: each is one of a kind. Two identical "pashminas" are the sign of a machine, not an artisan.
The word "cashmere" is itself simply an old spelling of Kashmir — the Valley these shawls come from, and the only place this art has been perfected.
A Shawl Once Worn by Empresses
The Kashmiri shawl has been the ultimate symbol of luxury for five centuries. From 1526 the Mughal court gave the finest as khil'at — robes of honour — and in France the shawl became the height of fashion through Empress Joséphine, who is said to have owned nearly two hundred. To wear one today is to carry that unbroken lineage on your shoulders.
How to Wear a Pashmina Shawl
A pashmina is the most versatile luxury a wardrobe can hold — light enough for spring evenings, warm enough for winter:
- Draped over an evening gown or a little black dress
- As a bridal or wedding-guest wrap
- Across the shoulders of a coat in colder months
- Knotted loosely for an effortless daytime look
